Layout/Anatomy of a Page Design

The anatomy of a magazine consist of how you're going to split up your magazine and the different sections. There's different elements and some of these include

  • Cover Page- This is the first page of the magazine which makes it the most important. It has the main titles and subtitles and a picture of the main topic. This is what your audience will be first looking at so it has to look very presentable.
  • Table of Contents- It creates a breakdown of what will be inside the magazine and how its organized. It can be designed with or without margins, it's honestly however you like it.
  • Imprints/Contributors- This part of the magazine is usually placed in the front of the book but can also be put in the back. It's basically the list of all the people that put some type of work in the magazine. The design is usually simple and the logo is placed at the top of the page.
  •  Letter from the Editor- This is the first editorial page of the magazine. It's a welcome letter from the editor of the magazine explaining  the content of the topic.
  • Articles- The stories that's going to be talked about in the article.
  • Back of the book- This is the last part of the magazine that consist of remaining content, shorter articles, listings, remaining columns and horoscopes. The design remains as the beginning of the magazine and follows a rigid structure.

Market Research of a Magazine

The market research of a magazine is a strategy that lets producers learn more about the audience and their preferences. This is to attract the audience and gain more advertising sales.

To do this, firstly it includes developing a circulation strategy. This includes defining your objectives to help you focus on the research you need.

The you will have to figure out what you already know and use that to determine what kind of research do you need. This could include quantitative and qualitative research. After the research has been collected this is where you begin to meet your objectives by seeing if you have all the information you need.

It would be best to have a systematic schedule of customer visits to help form a concept of how the people think of your publication. All this will be then used to create a survey for your audience which will help you know what type of content they would like to see.

Then you just repeat this process and make sure everything is settled and to the audiences likings.

Production of Magazines

The production of a magazine basically consist of the steps it takes to get your magazine together. This process could take awhile seeing as it needs to be planned properly and carefully in order for your magazine to turn out perfect for you. The process includes communication, planning, and organization. It also includes different departments such as editorial, advertising, printer, and the circulation department.

It's actually said that this process begins begins with the end. The editors and publishers choose a date in which they want the magazine to be finished and start scheduling when the planning of the magazine is going to start so they could continue from there. This planning could take month or even up to a year in order to come up with what stories will be mentioned in the magazine. Staff then submit their ideas to the editors and queries from free lance writers are sent to the editors. After this a manuscript is written and given to the magazine with a hard copy and this is where the magazine either accepts or rejects the manuscript. Once the manuscript is accepted it enters the copyediting phase. This is where it is checked for accuracy and all the facts in the manuscript are verified. It's also reviews by a copy editor for any grammar errors and organizational problems. Once all of this is done, the art director and editor make decisions about the illustration and photography that's being used. They review all the designs and send it back to the copy desk for proofreading and trimming. Finally. once the layout and everything is approved the magazine is now ready for printing!
